The Big Dipper is commonly mistaken as a constellation. It is actually an asterism, a recognizable shape in the night sky that is not one of the official 88 constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). However, the entirety of the Big Dipper resides within the constellation Ursa Major, often referred to as the Big Bear. The Big Dipper can be see year around at Northern latitudes.
